Today we are going to be learning a lick in the style of a guitar player who breached the gap between Latin music, blues and rock, Carlos Santana.
Carlos Santana is celebrated as one of the most expressive guitar players in music history and has enjoyed a long and successful career with the band Santana as well as a collaborative recording artist.
Some of the collaborative partners Carlos Santana has recorded and performed with include Steven Tyler, Rob Thomas, Chad Kroger, Dave Mathews and Kirk Hammett.
His lead guitar playing is characterised by soulful bends, blues rock phrases, expressive mixtures of modes, Latin flavoured legato licks and musical phrases that mimic other instruments.
Today we will be exploring some of Carlos Santana’s signature techniques with a lick in the key of C. So plug in, tune up, crank that amp all the way up to 11 and let’s get started!
