5 Things You MUST Do Before You Can Improve Your Rock Guitar Playing
Understand the musical description “Rock” is an extremely broad one that includes but is not limited to the following styles; Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Country Rock, Blues Rock, Pop Rock, Psychedelic, Metal, Alternate, Progressive, Punk, etc.
To achieve the rock guitar playing ability you truly want and to get the most out of your guitar lessons there are a couple of very important things you MUST understand before committing yourself to electric guitar lessons.
Here are 5 of the most important things you MUST do before taking the plunge to improve your rock guitar playing.
1. You MUST Understand That You Can’t Just Have A “Couple” Of Lessons, You Need AT LEAST A Few Good Months.
As a professional music educator I have lost count of the times I have been contacted regarding “a couple of lessons for the electric guitar”.
Though a “couple” of lessons will be enough for us to identify your guitar playing goals and ambitions, any musical and technical elements that need to be improved in order for you to achieve your playing goals and any inhibiting musical or technical elements that you have unconsciously developed that are stunting your improvement and stopping you from becoming the guitarist you truly want to be, in most cases a “couple” of lessons is still only enough to scratch the service.
Developing musical knowledge and physical electric guitar playing ability takes time.
Booking yourself a “couple” of guitar lessons and expecting that to be enough to overcome your challenges and achieve your ambitions is like buying a gym membership on Monday and expecting to look like Charles Atlas by Friday.
Just like a gym membership, guitar lessons will take at least a few good months of dedication for you to really start experiencing the amazing results your after and to receive a generous return on your investment.
The truth is, unless you’re willing to dedicate yourself to lessons for at least a few good months, you may as well be wasting your time and throwing money out your car window.

2. You MUST Be “Teachable”.
After accepting that you need a few good months of guitar lessons to experience the results and achievements you want, you must also understand that you need to be “teachable” in order to get the most out of your lessons.
Some guitar students with plenty of passion for their instrument and lots of potential to become the guitarist they want to be will still sabotage their musical success by not allowing themselves to be teachable.
Instead they will turn their nose up at lesson material and practice instructions like a child refusing to eat their vegetables because they don’t want to practice a certain way or work on a certain thing, even if it would be of substantial benefit for them.
Or they will gingerly back away from lesson material and practice instructions because it’s forcing them to confront their playing weaknesses and that makes them uncomfortable.
Before you decide to dedicate yourself to guitar lessons you must ask yourself if you are teachable or are willing to be teachable during your lessons and practice week.
In order to get the most out of your lessons and to really improve your guitar playing, you must make the choice between pride or improvement and leave your pride at the door.
If you are unwilling to do so then you should address this before contacting any guitar teachers because with that kind of attitude you wont last long in anybody’s studio.
3. You MUST MAKE The Time For Lessons And Practice, Don’t Expect To “Find” The Time.
As adults, we will rarely just “find” the time to do things we want to do, we must priorities and “make” the time to do them.
It is not enough to go through our days hoping that we will stumble across a spare hour or two where we can play and practice our guitar, instead we must designate time every day for guitar playing and practicing that takes priority over everything else.
Remember; anything that is not scheduled, may not actually happen.
Scheduling reoccurring, designated time for practicing and playing your guitar is the most important thing for your improvement.
Before contacting any guitar teachers first you must understand that you will need to make time for playing and practicing because there are only so many times a guitar teacher will except “I just couldn’t find the time” as an excuse for a week of no practice.

4. You MUST Trust The Guidance And Expertise Of Your Guitar Teacher.
If you are considering taking guitar lessons then it is because you are unhappy with something in your guitar playing, can’t seem to work it out, are tired of going it alone and would like the guidance, knowledge and support of an expert.
Yet some guitar students will sabotage their musical success by challenging the lesson material and practice instructions of their teacher even after the students have accepted that they don’t know what’s best for their own musical development.
You must trust the guidance and expertise of your guitar teacher and be willing to apply the lesson materials and practice instructions they have set for you even if these instructions knock your pride slightly (this is especially common when students are given practice instructions to re-wire bad playing techniques).
Also, if your teacher gives you practice instructions and tells you that they will be of substantial benefit to you, yet you either don’t want to practice them, or don’t see how they would benefit you, you should trust the guidance of your teacher and apply their instructions.
If your teacher has a wide reputation as an excellent music educator and an impressive list of great guitar players they have mentored, it is apparent they know whats best for you and you should trust their guidance and apply their lessons.
5. You MUST Understand There Will Always Be Room For Improvement.
No matter how good you feel you are, or how good you become, there will always be room for improvement.
Electric guitar playing isn’t like a video game where you get to level 10 and then that’s it, improvement go’s on and on and on.
The more you learn, the more you learn there’s more to learn 🙂
Some of the best vocalists in the world have a vocal coach, most even have their vocal coach tour with them.
No matter how good you become, or how good you feel you are, electric guitar lessons with a teacher who specialises in working with players just like you will always be substantially beneficial.
