Want to know the musical concept a lot of people don’t understand how to integrate into their soloing?
Arpeggios!
I think one of the reasons why is because a lot of guitar players don’t realise the many different ways arpeggios can be used.
When lead guitarists inevitably stumble across Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen and become inspired to learn more about arpeggios – they generally learn them straight up and down.
There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact – I don’t know how you would learn them any other way.
The only thing is when the guitarist tries to use them in a solo – the only way they know how to play them is straight up and down.
There are ways of playing arpeggios that make them sound less like traditional arpeggios and more like licks, there are ways of linking arpeggios together so they sound less predictable.
There are so many ways of using arpeggios that they should never be dismissed as an option for any solo.
