Blues Guitar Lessons

Blues guitar lessons are one of my most requested services, particularly blues lead guitar. I’ve helped a great many people develop the ability to play blues solos and I’m sure I can help you too.

Great blues lead guitar playing is made up of several important things, let’s take a look at some of them.

Bending

The ability to execute soulful and musical bends is an essential skill for any aspiring blues lead guitarist. Many types of bends are used in blues lead guitar; full tone bends, 1 and a ½ tone bends, 2 tone bends, ¼ tone (microtonal) bends just to name a few.

Technique

The ability to execute soulful and musical bends is an essential skill for any aspiring blues lead guitarist. Many types of bends are used in blues lead guitar; full tone bends, 1 and a ½ tone bends, 2 tone bends, ¼ tone (microtonal) bends just to name a few.

Phrasing

Blues lead guitar is made up of great phrasing. In fact, blues lead guitar is often cited as the best style of lead guitar to help people understand great phrasing. Phrasing is a mystery to a lot of guitarist. In laymen terms, phrasing is the way you arrange the notes you play when soloing. They’re kind of like musical sentences. In more technical terms, phrasing is based a lot around rhythm – how the notes of a phrase fit and fall within the beats of a bar, as well as the notes you play – which would fall under intervals and chord tones.

Vibrato

Vibrato is a technique that’s come to be synonymous with blues lead guitar. From BB King to Albert King – every prominent blues lead guitarist has great vibrato.

Theory

Yes, you heard me – understanding theory is an important part of playing blues solos well. Understanding scales all over the neck and how to mix certain scales together is an essential skill for blues lead guitar. Understanding how to compliment the chords of a progression with the phrases you play is also an essential skill for any blues lead guitarists. Both of these concepts require a certain grasp of music theory.

In order to become a competent blues lead guitarist, you need to develop a firm grasp of the aforementioned techniques and musical concepts. If you’d like to improve your blues lead guitar playing I can help you develop your phrasing, bending, vibrato, technique and theory.
